Kazakh across fonts

Kazakh's writing systems lean on letters most fonts never shipped. Below, the same sentence is set in each font in two of those systems — Cyrillic Kazakh and QazaqKey's Latin. Watch the Cyrillic column collapse while QazaqKey holds.

In the Cyrillic column the Kazakh-specific letters (қ ғ ө ү ұ) fall back or vanish. The Official column renders here — these are well-supported fonts — but its ı ğ ū ş are Latin-Ext, the tier premium design fonts drop. The two QazaqKey columns are the everyday default (k) and reference (q) registers — reference trades a little font-robustness for precision (қ→q, ғ→ğ).

Where QazaqKey is also clearer

Font coverage aside, the restored glide й → j keeps words unambiguous where the official alphabet's й → i blurs them.

The catch with “popular” fonts

The fonts above that render Kazakh fine are popular because their authors added the extended sets — that coverage is what made them popular. The fonts designers actually want to use (premium display faces from foundries like Klim, Commercial Type, Pangram Pangram) often ship Latin only. There, even the official alphabet's ı ğ ū ş turn to tofu — while QazaqKey's Latin-1 ä ñ ö ü keep rendering. Coverage isn't binary either: a font can include a letter and still draw it as an ugly afterthought. QazaqKey minimizes that exposure by needing the fewest, commonest letters.
